The Divisio Tertia was created by Hope (1836) to accommodate the future Mitobatinae (then represented by his genus Dolischoscelis) plus Phalangium (equivalent to the present day Palpatores). The concept of separating the slender Mitobatinae of the other sturdy members of Gonyleptidae reflects the original classification by Perty (1833). It represents a period in taxonomy when authors looked for "bridges" between taxa.
