Giljarovia Kratochvíl, 1959 is a genus of Nemastomatidae Nemastomatinae with 11 species, distributed in Eurasia.
Type species: Giljarovia rossica Kratochvíl, 1959.
Diagnosis and key to species: Martens (2006).
Diagnosis[]
The Giljarovia species are noteworthy because of the strikingly large apophyses of the chelicerae and by their male stridulatory device. Cuticular structures suggest that the pedipalp femora are rubbed against the anterior border of the ocularium – an interaction otherwise unknown in Opiliones (Gruber 1969). In the SEM image that differentiation appears as modified sensory hairs, which are firmly adherent to the basal article.
Besides Giljarovia only Mediostoma ceratocephalum Gruber 1976 has this distribution of structures in the stridulatory organs, but the genus affiliation of ceratocephalum has not been fully resolved. Only G. tenebricosa lacks this structure. Since this species is also isolated by genital morphology, it represents a separate evolutionary line, and it may even require a separate genus. The striking antler structures of the ocularium of Mediostoma ceratocephalum have at least one functional equivalent in the thoracic reinforcement of Giljarovia thoracocornuta.
